While Windows 8 enables hard drives with a simple plug-and-play recognition, some older Windows versions require software drivers to configure and operate them. Drivers -- like those for a Seagate external hard drive -- are typically included with the initial purchase on a CD or DVD packaged with the new installation, but you can also download them from the Seagate website.

Navigate to the Seagate Portable Hard Drive Drivers site (see Resources).

Click 'Download the Drivers for Windows 98 SE and USB Connections' near the bottom of the page.

Click 'Save' when prompted, and then allow the download to complete.

Double-click 'ST1USB98.exe,' and then extract the files to your Desktop when prompted.

Click 'Start | Settings | Control Panel | System | Device Manager | Disk Drives.'

Right-click the external drive, select 'Properties,' and then click 'Driver.'
